Venue: FXB site
Date: 21st September until built!
The Festival of Xtreme Building, in partnership with Ramboll Whitbybird and Associated Architects are building a mud house that is not only habitable but also has a zero-carbon footprint, for under £300 – predominantly from soil.
The Mud House is constructed using locally-gathered soil which has been compressed into bricks, meaning that it has a zero carbon footprint. The aim of the project is to demonstrate to both self-builders and developers that such materials can be used in construction, with great benefits to the environment.
The process of mud brick building is enabled by using a 17 year old Simva Ram machine that compresses soil into bricks. The mud house raises questions about how we can turn waste into energy, and to what extent the domestic building process can be reclaimed by the ordinary man in the street.
The extreme structure has been built with the kind contributions from Armoury Group. The Festival of Xtreme Building would like to thank Associated Architects, Ramboll Whitbybird, Chivenor Primary School in Castle Vale, Joe, Dave, Seeyam, Dawn and Nigel for taking part in the workshops and for their hard work making bricks!
Special thanks to:
Sponsors: Ramboll Whitbybird, Associated Architects
